Help with Auto Repairs Is a Cell Phone Call Away

Mobile phones have become a lifeline for North American motorists. According to the Cellular Telephone Industry Association, more than 73 million calls are placed to 911 hotlines from cell phones every year. AAA handles an additional 14 million calls for emergency roadside assistance from cell callers. "Your cell phone can be perceived as a companion or a status symbol, but when you really need it, it can be your most important personal safety device," said John Nielsen, director of AAA's Approved Auto Repair Network. "Like a best friend, a cell phone can be comforting to those driving alone; they feel safer just knowing help is within reach." Now with assistance from AAA, this help can include referrals to trustworthy auto maintenance and repair businesses throughout the United States and Canada. This service is a boon to those traveling far from home, or just across town, if access to the closest reputable repair shop is required due to mechanical trouble on the road. For reliable assistance with vehicle repairs and maintenance, AAA has identified a network of approved repair facilities that include new car dealerships and independent repair shops. These shops meet AAA's strict quality standards and display AAA's logo. A phone call to 1-800-AAA-HELP or to a local AAA club phone number for emergency road service is all that is required to find the nearest AAA-approved shop. Calling ahead is always a good idea when arranging for auto repairs. Find out if the shop will be open, if they have time to work on your vehicle, if the repairs can be completed in a timely manner and if they have experience working with the make and model of the vehicle you drive. Cell phones and safety go hand in hand. However, to maintain safety, AAA suggests that motorists always park safely off the roadway when using a cellular phone.

Helmets – Why Do You Need It When Riding?

Helmet is a French derivative of the word ‘helm’ from 15th century. Although helmets are available in countless designs for different utilities, they all serve just one purpose, which is head protection. The earlier helmets used to be manufactured in leather till the 10th century AD when metals with inner cloth lining for cushioning and comfort of wearing on the head became the norm. Helmet wearing is mandatory in northern America, barring a few states, for all bikers, whereas Sikhs are demanding a waiver from this mandate. Functional Utility and Symbolism Till the early 20th century, helmets were basically the protective head gears of soldiers and used to be a part of combat uniform. With industrialization, helmets reinvented themselves and undergone a lot of changes, both in terms of strengths and weights and became a ‘must wear’ for certain industrial workers in sectors such as mining, construction and manufacturing etc. Surely, the popularity of helmets shot-up, thanks to the symbolic protection they offered. Typical Classification Helmets can be classified based on their utility and construction. The simplest for of helmets worn by construction workers and bicycle riders are nothing more than ‘hard hats’ as they are required to protect blunt impacts, whereas a soldier’s helmets are designed for ballistic impact protection. These are made by Kevlar©, which has excellent bullet proofing qualities and fragmentation powers. Helmets match particular needs also. Military helmets identify the ranks of the wearers with symbolic visors and bars therein, whereas ‘hard hats’ of bicycle riders sport large ventilation slots. Quality Standards Bikers and parents of small children are in dilemma concerning the sudden fall in children’s helmet prices. One must keep in mind that price is not a good quality indicator. In the US, the Consumer Product Safety Commission (CPSC) requires all helmets be certified. The certification is issued after stringent quality tests are carried out. There is another quality standard for helmets, too. Snell Memorial Foundation standards or ‘Snells’ as they are known are a bit extra stringent, albeit not compulsory by all types of helmet manufacturers to conform to. This fact should try to put at rest the apprehensions of consumers when they don’t see Snells’ label on helmets. It is hard to think of a modern and adventurous sport without helmets being mandatory. Although helmets aren’t absolutely safe, you can’t think of cross country biking without them, especially if the riders are your little ones, helmets are a must!

Helicopter For Sale

There are many reasons to purchase a helicopter for sale. Helicopters, often more affordable than their cousin, the air plane, afford both fun and function. Helicopters for fun and for business provide advantages over terrestrial vehicles, and can earn their keep in money saved. There are many business uses for helicopters for sale, and just as many leisure activities to pursue with a helicopter. Helicopters can increase the efficiency of sales for companies with wide geographic sales territories. Helicopters are easier to maintain than a company jet, and much less expensive. Helicopters get from place to place much quicker than a car could, and can carry greater amounts of products. For the fledgling company, a helicopter can add states to their sales territory without increasing the number of individuals providing sales. A helicopter provides a way for a salesperson to see about sales in one state, and still be home in a neighboring state in time for dinner. This can increase the turnaround of product after sale, and can decrease a company’s budget for travel and lodging of salespeople. Helicopters can make taking inventory on the road affordable and feasible, with on-demand merchandising increasing. A helicopter for sale may spell increased satisfaction for customers who want merchandise on the spot. A helicopter may also increase job satisfaction among traveling employees who understand the necessity of in personal contact but still wish to spend time with their families in the evenings. Helicopters for sale could spell future business ventures. Shuttle companies that use helicopters to ferry customers to and from cities provide a scenic view as well as a practical function. Helicopters for sale might be the beginning of a ferry business that brings customers to and from nearby cities. Cities located near major airports may benefit from this ferry service, because helicopters for sale and purchased for ferrying increase business traffic in a city. Helicopters provide an avenue for sight seeing that can bring personal pleasure as well as financial gain. Helicopter rides, ranging from fifty dollars an hour to much more in areas with interesting terrain, provide a better view than traditional airplane rides. This view increases the worth of a helicopter for sale. Customers may pay upwards of two hundred dollars for a helicopter ride over volcanoes. Helicopter rides that tour the Grand Canyon provide tourists a way to see the majesty of this natural phenomenon – a view they may miss when actually hiking in the canyon. Helicopters for sale are also very good candidates for search and rescue operations. Helicopters are preferable for search and rescue missions for many reasons. A Helicopter for sale on a search and rescue mission provides searchers a wide view of scenery. A helicopter has distinct flight advantages over airplanes for this purpose. Helicopters can get closer to the ground, and can hover, affording a slower scan of terrain. Helicopters can get into greater areas than airplanes, and should be considered first when outfitting a search and rescue mission.

Heater Problems, Eh?

Well, we’ve all encountered some sort of problem with our car’s heater, and for some reason it always happens when the weather is cold. You’re thinking oh it's cold outside, but all I have to do is walk from my home to my car. And I’ll be warm and toasty in no time, but of course it doesn’t always happen. But before you think about calling your mechanic you might be able to do the job yourself. Wouldn’t that be great? You can save a little money and replace the heater right away. Did you check the coolant, hoses and connections and did it all look fine? That would be the case more often then not. So what’s the problem? It’s likely that your Ford heater core has died. But if you go to your Ford dealer and ask for the price of a replacement heater core, the price can be shocking. Fortunately for us, it’s not too hard to change it yourself. For many cars, a heater core can be pulled out of the dash or check under the hood next to the firewall, once you locate it just take it out and replace it with a new one. If you buy the part off the internet or someplace else, it can save you even more money, instead of making the purchase at your dealership. For the most part, you can find any core heater for any type of vehicle you have on the internet. It can save you bundles. So you don’t have to wait until spring roles around and you don’t have to think about the problem for a few months. There is no excuse for not replacing your core heater. You can replace it for a lot less yourself. There is no reason to be cold while you’re driving in your car this winter.

Heater Core Problems: Cold Snap Solutions!

Doesn’t it figure, that the very first time you have a problem with your car’s heater core is when you need it the most: in the middle of a horrible cold snap. Frost on the outside and frost on the inside -- giving new meaning to air conditioned discomfort. Cranking up the heat means billows of cold air filling your car’s cabin instead of the soothing and relaxing heat you should be feeling…ugh! Sounds like a job for your mechanic, but it may be something you can repair yourself. Please read on for more information. Playing with the heat settings does no good and a check of the coolant, hoses, and connections reveals that everything is okay. So, what is the problem? More than likely your Ford heater core has died. You jump in your car and head directly over to your Ford dealer to get a price on a new heater core. Within moments you are gasping for air as the man behind the counter looks over his computerized inventory and quotes an outrageously high price for a new heater core. For a moment you don’t know whether to whack the guy over the head or start driving around with a portable heater you plug into your car’s cigarette lighter. Quickly you dismiss either option and decide to take matters into your own hands. Fortunately a heater core isn’t all that difficult to change yourself. For most cars, a heater core can be reached by pulling out the dash or checking under the hood adjacent to the firewall, locating the unit, yanking it out, and replacing it with a new one. Naturally, you will pay gobs of money through your dealer’s parts department, but you have other options besides visiting the dealer or making a futile trip to your local junkyard: shop the internet. That’s right, online auto parts wholesalers carry Jeep heater cores and heater cores for just about any make/model of car out there. Best yet, when shopping with a wholesaler like the Heater Core Experts, you can save big bucks. By purchasing direct from the manufacturer, a first class wholesaler will turn around and sell a heater core to you for less. A lot less than what Mr. Parts Dealer would charge and without you having to pay for labor costs either. Yes, you could always ignore the problem and hope that Spring comes early and stays forever, or you can sell your first born child and head over to your dealer’s part department and hope they have mercy on you…they most certainly will not! Better yet, shop online for an OEM replacement heater core that meets or exceeds manufacturer specifications, save big, and get warm!

Happy Honda Days, Eh?

I love this time of year! The seasonal music, the lights, manger scenes, and the silly ads on television. No, I am not talking about ads pitching products to put in your stocking or to set under your Christmas tree. Instead, what I like is all the car ads cleverly designed to get you to leave the mall and hit dealer showrooms. There is a lot more then meets the eye when a car ad makes its appearance during the holiday season. It isn’t all ho, ho, ho either! Read on and I will tell you what it is all about. Happy Honda Days! Yes, playing on the “Happy Holidays” theme the group of five or six “carolers” singing Honda songs are doing what they can do to get you to buy a new Honda. So, why this pitch and why this time of year? For two reasons: consumers are buying Christmas presents, so purchasing a new car is nowhere near the top of anyone’s priorities, and Toyota. Toyota?! Yes, that is right. Toyota and Honda are once again battling for the top spot for the best selling car in America. Long ceded by American automakers who sell more trucks than cars, the Honda Accord and Toyota Camry are the two top selling cars. Guess what? December 31st marks the final day that cars sold can be tabulated as 2005 sales. Honda wants you in their showrooms and they want you to buy. Move over, Toyota! Don’t think for a moment that Honda is the only manufacturer with a big year end sales drive in place. Virtually all manufacturers are in a race to get you to buy a new car now. Each is hoping that you aren’t too busy to watch a little bit of television, listen to the radio, scour the newspaper, or search the internet in hopes that an ad promoting their product will find its way before your eyes. You can’t shop all the time, right? Right? To help you out, the following are some of the current campaigns already under way and the brand they are touting:
  • December to Remember; Lexus
  • Toyotathon; Toyota
  • Miles of Freedom Plan; Dodge
  • Keep It Simple; Ford, Lincoln, Mercury
  • Red Tag Sale; GM
  • A to Z Year End Event; Nissan
  • The Cadillac Season’s Best Sales Event; Cadillac
  • Winter Event; Mercedes There is no telling what other sales events are being planned. By the time the new year rolls in, you are likely to be as sick of them as you will be of all the tinsel, the egg nog, and your 47th viewing of “A Christmas Story.” Happy holidays to you and yours; Happy Honda Days if you are choose to purchase a new car during this already overstressed time of the year!

    Guides For Perfect Car Dealerships

Have you considered buying a used car? There are fair and not-so-fair deals lurking around but for most of us, we are not just looking for something fair, we are looking for something great! The Internet will equip you with valuable details about unbiased car reviews and ratings, including price ratings, specifications and reasonable, yet honest, reviews, including photos of used cars. Comparison shops furnish and maintain databases as well where they keep price listings for used cars with their respective merchandisers across the net. Private Seller Listings: Great Deals for Real Great deals may not always turn out great in some circumstances. Unwise selection and choice of car dealers could lead you to wasting your money. In fact in 2004 alone, it was recorded that half of those who bought their own cars in the US have considered purchasing used cars rather than brand new ones. A great deal of the population is becoming more and more open to buying used cars due to their maintenance flexibility and overall cost. This information should give you more reason to research on which car dealerships are offering the most sought after secondhand cars on the net. While used cars are getting more popular today it is practical and wise to look for specs which includes conditioning requirements, vehicle history and real pricing report and comprehensive range of values for used cars and possible trade-ins and leasing. Look for Reviews A good car dealership offers accurate and honest advice and reviews for prospective car buyers. Reviews provide clients with information regarding the nature of the product and its relative condition. Others even provide true-cost-to-own values in order to better prepare you for the cost of the transaction. Many even dispense alluring incentives and rebates for sale buyers and those who opt for deduction on certain payment methods for easy money transactions. The majority of dealer networks across the internet provide search listings to better approximate your location and needs. Search listings would provide you a roster detailing the latest used car models on sale together with their descriptions, vehicle condition, history reports and cosmetic essentials and requirements. Although most accept trade-ins, some assess additional charges for appraisal, and the value-assessment might fall lower than you expected. Used cars may range from $15,000 + to $30,000 + for a good one. Some would even drop below $20,000 but requires a considerable amount of reconditioning.

    Guidelines In Buying Cars Online

The Web is a hassle free place to shop for cars. There are many advantages to shopping cars online. First, it greatly reduces the hassle of dealing with car dealers and salesmen. When buying a car online, you don’t have to listen to a dealer talk about the specs of a car. You just have to read all about it in a website. You don’t have to go to a showroom, you just to have to point and click your mouse and you could browse through different make and models of cars. And if you want to take a second look at a car it’s very easy.

The advantage of shopping for a car online is that all transactions can be done without you having to go out of your room. After ordering the car you want and paying the price, all you have to do is to wit for your brand new vehicle to be delivered to the nearest dealer. Some dealers would even deliver the car right at your doorstep (or garage for that matter).

There are basically two types of online car shopping website. One will only get you in touch with a real car seller. This means you have to transact the traditional way. Then there are websites that would take car of everything. Some websites would even deliver the car at your doorstep. Of course this would entail a bigger amount of service fee. And deliveries are made only to nearby areas.

But before you click and buy, you must first know exactly what kind of car you want. Determine the types of car you’re looking for and the price you are willing to pay for that car.

Below are some other tips on how to buy a car online.

    1. The most important thing to do is to research. Don’t get too excited. Check on the different packages available.

    2. Make sure that the Website you go to is secure and reliable. Most sites would let you browse by car type, by price range or both.

    3. If you don’t want to make all transactions online then you could ask the dealer to meet you in person once you found him on the Internet. Upon meeting the dealer, negotiate with him as you would a normal car dealer and then sign the papers.

    4. It’s not necessary to pin the model, year and male of the car you want to buy. Just a general picture would do. Determine how you will be using your new car and the reason why you are buying a car in the first place. Ask yourself what features are important to you. Do you give much ore importance to fuel efficiency than speed or vice versa? Are you more concerned about safety features than a good sound system? After you’ve done all these, it’s time to determine your budget. Just how much are you willing to spend for a vehicle?

    5. Once you have decided on a brand and model car it would be prudent t6o check on the history of the particular car line. You can easily do this by consulting consumer magazines and websites. You could also check out the website of the cart’s manufacturer (e.g. Ford, Toyota, BMW, etc.)

    6. If you cannot afford new models, there are websites hat sells used cars. Popular search engines usually have an automotive section so this is a good place to shop. If you don’t find one here you can try searching using the search string “used car.”

    7. Check the background of the website of the online car dealer by clicking on the “about us” section of the site. It is advisable to buy only from websites which has detailed information about the vehicles they are selling. Ask if they have conducted inspections of each car in their lot through independent mechanics. If they have, then you’ll know that that website is a good place to shop for cars. Most manufacturers' Web sites have detailed information on models, including available options, photos and MSRP (Manufacturer's Suggested Retail Price).

    8. Read reviews about the different make, model and year of cars. A good website must also have reviews and ratings for the cars they are selling. But you should also cross check by visiting independent car sites or sites that do not sell cars or are connected to car companies to get a more objective review.

    Grilles: The Ultimate Car Accessory

Adding a grille to your car is the perfect way to make a dramatic statement while you drive. While these impressive looking car parts originate in a practical purpose, many drivers add them to their vehicle simply for that extra touch of pizzazz. With many brands of car boasting a signature style grille, this is a definite style statement that no discerning driver will want to miss.

Grilles were a car part originally designed as an opening at the front of a vehicle, where air could enter the vehicle’s radiator, helping to keep the engine cool. An important job, as anyone who has ever suffered from an overheated engine can attest. A propeller was located behind the grille to help circulate the cooler incoming air and prevent such an inconvenience from occurring. Thus, grilles originally emerged from a practical need, but their stylish look soon caught the eye of the discerning motorist.

As is our wont as human beings, we are not satisfied with simple practicality, and we derive great joy from elaborating on an item’s original function, increasing its efficiency while making it look fantastic. The dramatic statement made by the impressive car grille harnessed the imagination of many automobile enthusiasts, and now grilles adorn all kinds of different vehicles, embracing almost every brand of car you could think of.

Grilles bestow any car with a certain rugged masculine look that appeals to many drivers. While many of today’s car emerge from the manufacturing floor with sleek lines and a polished look, the use of grilles is the ideal way to impart something of the more hearty side of life, giving your vehicle an unmistakable edge.

For car customizing enthusiasts, the car grille is a great way of making an indelible personal mark. Available from a wide variety of sources, including easy to access online car part stores, car grilles are an easy way to make a huge impact. Simply match your make and model of car with the style of grille you are looking for, and you are on your way to owning a car that is going places all its own.

Great Value Buying Used Car Parts

Proper maintenance of a vehicle either new or old is the same. The engine has to be checked from time to time, the oil has to be changed and spark plugs need to be replaced. Any product wears down in time and the best thing to do if you are on a budget is to buy cheap, good quality used car parts.

Acquiring used car parts is the same as looking around for a second hand car. You can either look for it in the classified ads, go around the neighborhood checking out the various shops that do sell these parts or you can surf the net saving some time and effort and search for the parts that are needed.

There was time that such parts could only be found in dealerships and in the shops of local mechanics. This made it a challenge for those who needed it badly especially since there was no guarantee that the part if found, would fit the requirements and the seller would usually jack up the price giving the buyer no choice but to pay what was demanded.

    Searching for cheap used car parts does not have to be that difficult anymore as long as you remember a few things before looking for it;

    • By knowing exactly what is needed depending on the make and model of the car you have, it will make it easier for the person to go around looking for the exact car part

    • After having the specific part in mind, you can then check how much you are willing to spend to acquire that item.

    • Some parts that are needed don’t have to be the original. There are some parts that can be bought at surplus or a compatible part from another car make and model enabling can be used making a person save money for other things.

    • After getting the proper information, you can start by checking out either the local shops or dealers. If these people don’t have it, perhaps another dealer can be recommended to assist in the procurement. Another place you can go to are the local junkyards since a lot of parts there can be reused. Asking the local auto club for help and browsing through the Internet are also other options a person has to help in the search for other hard to find parts which can be ordered and delivered in a few days time.

Great Detailing Products For The Do It Yourselfer

Thanks for visiting and finding my article. What follows is information that I have pulled together from several sources. I hope you find it both interesting and helpful.

Who makes the best quality detailing products or where can I get professional quality detailing products for my own car seems to be what a lot of people are asking.

You may be able to get the best products on the market or the same products that auto detailers and the serious hobbyists use. It is quite well known that if you intend to win auto show competitions you need the best quality detailing products to get that mirror finish. Young men also know that if their car is not looking at its best, their chances of getting a date will be tough. No one wants to go out with someone with a dirty car. For most people, their car is a reflection of themselves and are very particular of its appearance.

Do it yourselfers have asked if there is a special product they can use on their car to make their baby shine. You can find some excellent products online and they will ship them direct to you. One line of products was the American Shine Product Line of auto detail products. It is easy to order online and it comes within a week. The 'Gift Pack,' the Tire Dressing and Carnauba Liquid Wax are all good.

After following the instructions, the results were great. The Rubber and Tire Dressing had good shine, but did not have the stickiness, which would attract dirt or blowing dust. The Carnauba Liquid wax was not difficult to use and gave a good shine, but you must make sure the surface has been properly cleaned first. To insure a proper wash, we used carnauba car wash soap, which is recommended.

Although these products are usually made for street rods, motorcycles and customs, these products also worked great on a motor home and a 4-door maroon Ford with mild oxidation. The results were all on their website stating they were pleased with the shine.

I want to thank you for visiting. Go ahead and look around for additional tips and information.

Great Parts For The Racing Enthusiast!

You are on your final lap of what has been an adventurous race filled with mayhem, mishaps, and a near misstep that could have cost you dearly. The two top drivers are within reach as you navigate the track’s final turn. Do you risk it? Will you swing over to the left lane and pass them both or settle for a strong third place finish instead? Certainly, this “close, but no cigar” finish would be a moral victory for some drivers, but not for you. Suddenly, you swing your wheels to the left, press the pedal to the metal and pass driver #2 and edge just ahead of driver #1 as the checkered flag waves down before you. You win the race by mere inches because of the confidence you have in your car.

Oh, were we all so confident in our rides! You may not be a race car driver, but if you value performance then you know that keeping your car well maintained is essential toward ensuring a safe and fun ride every time. Importantly, upgrading your car to include premium performance parts is a necessity, so let’s take a look at what racing enthusiasts the world over are doing to achieve maximum control.

What good is a performance car if it doesn’t “speak” performance? Specifically, the tone of your vehicle’s exhaust system should tell everyone that your car has the power to go along with its performance. That is why choosy drivers are selecting performance Remus exhaust systems for their rides. A Remus exhaust system is imported from Germany and can be found on many Mercedes, Mini, Volkswagen, and BMW cars. In America, Jeep and Ford owners have learned that the stainless steel and aluminum components that go into every Remus exhaust system can ensure a long life, better performance, and a great tone. Remus backs up their product with an unlimited 3 year warranty.

A great set of shocks on every vehicle is necessary and all the more so if you put your car through the paces. Every single turn and every single lift in the road can be navigated with confidence if your car has the right shocks or struts to ensure maximum control. KYB has been the original equipment shock for more manufacturers worldwide then any other brand for many years now. Enthusiasts select KYB performance shocks for maximum damping and greater tolerances every time. No brand can possibly match KYB in popularity and for offering the best bang for the buck.

A Turbonetics intercooler can give your ride more power and torque without an adverse impact on engine endurance. As a bolt on turbo system, Turbonetics can quickly provide more power, use less fuel, and is available on a variety of gasoline and diesel applications. Drivers of the Toyota Supra, select full size Chevy pick ups, and owners of the Subaru Impreza have all learned that a Turbonetics turbocooler can maximize power and performance quickly without a big time loss in downtime.

Yes, you may never compete in a NASCAR race or qualify for the Indy 500, however that doesn’t mean you can’t maximize your ride’s performance. Install high quality and cost effective car parts from the Race Pages wholesale store today to achieve that race car edge.

    Got A License Plate Frame?

There are many ways to promote something you care about and to celebrate someone or something you love, but few ways are as unique, fun, and inexpensive as getting a license plate frame for your car.

It sounds funny at first, but think of how great having a unique license plate frame could be. One of the biggest reasons that most people decide to purchase a license plate frame is to promote an idea or an interest that they are passionate about. You can get a license plate frame customized about practically anything whether it is to save the whales or to give every child a chance to live. There are not many easier or more unoffensive ways to advertise your cares to the people around you than to use a license plate frame.

Many people also get a license plate frame to show support for their favorite team or their college alma mater. More inexpensive than customizing your actual license plate, buying a customized license plate frame will announce your loyalties to exactly the same amount of people.

Just think about how often you drive your car around town and on trips. Your unique license plate frame will be seen by a variety of people every time you drive. If you're tired of seeing people protest for or against their favorite causes in ways that are harmful and offensive, consider protesting the things you care about in harmless and silent way. You will have to do nothing except drive in order to celebrate and advertise loud enough for many people to see.

Another great thing about personalizing a license plate frame is that it is a less permanent and less messy option than attaching a bumper sticker to your car. Using a license plate frame instead gives you the flexibility to change it or remove it at any time. If you think about all of the ways you could choose to celebrate and support a team or a cause, a license plate frame is one of the most inexpensive ways to do it. There is no need (unless of course you want to) to buy clothing, flags, or other means of advertising. Simply find a store near you and get your license plate frame made in little time at all.

A license plate frame can also symbolize the place you came from or your favorite place to travel. With a little bit of creative thinking, a license plate frame can be made to display almost anything at all. You can even go the extreme of having a license plate frame customized to fit every season of the year or to celebrate specific events or holidays.

Whatever you desire to celebrate, promote, or advertise, consider the benefits of a customized, unique license plate frame and get yours today.

Golf Carts Can Be Used Off The Course Too

A golf cart, or golf car, is a small, motorized vehicle used to carry golfers and personnel from one place to another on golf courses. These little vehicles were designed for those individuals who can’t or aren’t inclined to walk, such as senior citizens and the handicapped. Golf carts are typically two-seaters with room for at least two golf bags.

Golf carts are now available in an array styles and colors, just like regular automobiles. The difference between regular automobiles and golf carts is that the latter, due to its small, low-powered engine, is only able to move at slow speeds, which fits it with its intended purpose: golfers can relax and enjoy the surroundings while traversing across fairways and greens during an otherwise laidback game.

These specialized vehicles are built at three primary manufacturers: Yamaha, “E Z Go,” and Ingersoll Rand Corporation's Club Car division. The last manufacturer, known simply as “Club Car,” is the main source for the golf cart family. Each manufacturer has developed its own line of aftermarket parts and accessories to facilitate off-road capabilities, such as a variety of kits intended to enhance appearance and performance in non-public settings.

Golf carts run on both gas-powered and electricity-powered engines, but can also accommodate larger engines, such as the Honda 24 HP v twin engine or the Briggs & Stratton engine having a variety of sizes and power capabilities that start at 16-31HP. Speed and torque gear capabilities for both gas- and electric-powered carts can also be enhanced to personal preferences, considering the particular engine is designed to accommodate such increments.

Golf carts have small shallow-treaded tires intended for easy traveling on the smooth, flat or undulating surfaces of golf grass, but can be fitted with larger tires having deeper, more aggressive tread patterns for heavier terrain.

Other golf cart features include: hitch mounts, cargo boxes, radios, high-performance mufflers, air filters, and paint and decal sets for that personal touch.
A variety of this golf cart can also be used in many non-golf communities that are safe and quiet and have very few or no pollutants. These carts are called Neighborhood Electric Vehicle (NEVs), and have limited but incremental operating capabilities. This kind of [golf] cart is especially ideal for senior communities.

Golf carts are neat little vehicles that are both convenient and easy to operate. When in nice weather and a pleasing environment, they can provide all of one’s traveling needs without an effort.

Golf Cars - 1001 Uses, With Imagination

Golf Carts, Club cars, Golf Buggies - all the same thing - have come a long way from the golf course, although they can still be found there, too.

Golf Carts were originally designed to ferry golfers and their equipment from the end of one hole on the course to the start of the next, and back to the clubhouse. Whatever happened to golf as exercise? You will now see golf carts in all kinds of places far removed from the golf course.

Golf Cars are used on university campuses and to ferry presidents around. Their other uses are only just beginning to be explored. They are used in large warehouses and factories to move around quickly, without the noise and pollution that a conventional vehicle would cause.

In many ways these compact vehicles represent a ready-made alternative to the gas-engined automobile, except they are small and go slowly. Around town they are perfect for carrying the kids to school, or going to the grocery store. These uses have not taken off because of the attitude of most drivers, who insist on speed and protective devices around them.

You can buy standard accessories like a windscreen or enclosing body, or you can go for full customization.

You may want an electric vehicle for around the farm - you can buy spray equipment to fit to most "Golf Cars". You may want a 4x4 "Golf Car" for hunting or just driving through the forest. All of these are available at reasonable cost.

You want camouflage? You've got it.
You want weapon racks? You've got them.
You want a sunbrella? You've got it.

Golf Cars are used on university campuses and to ferry presidents around. Their other uses are only just beginning to be explored. Golf cars provide a quiet and environmentally acceptable mode of personal transport.

Go Carts - How to Survive by Being Safe!

Go carts are certainly thrilling, but they can also be dangerous if not taken seriously. You have to remember that it's not just you out on the track. There will be other drivers attempting to pass you around sharp corners whose talent may be questionable at best. By following a few common-sense safety rules you can eliminate most of the serious dangers.

Different types of go carts can have speeds ranging anywhere from very slow to very fast. But regardless of the speed they are always exciting to race. They are simple vehicles that are also easy to handle. No matter what your skill level there are tracks all over the country that will fill your needs and wants. There are many go cart classes or levels that will cater to every age range from kids to adults. Gocarts are generally easy to drive and easy to control. This is why they have become so popular, because it's an easy and relatively cheap way to experience the thrill of Formula 1 racing without the expense or the danger.

There are many different types of vehicles that are built for racing fun. Among these are ATV off road vehicles, motor scooters, dirt bikes, mopeds, mini bikes, motorcycles and gopeds. But if you are wanting to experience the thrill and excitement of Indy Car or Formula 1 open-wheel racing, with a powerful gas engine rocketing you down the track, and with relative safety, go carts are what you will want to be climbing into.

For beginners to experts, and everyone in between, go carts are fun. Whether you want to drive as slow as your Grandma or as fast as Tony Stewart and Michael Schumacher, racing go carts can get you there. Many top professional NASCAR, Formula One and Indy Car drivers today got their start in the lowly go cart. With a lot of practice maybe you can achieve the same success.

It wasn't too long ago that go carts were mostly found in family fun centers where any kid and his little brother could go racing at a whopping 15 or mph. They still exist, but real go cart tracks have been springing up all over. It's now possible to go 60 miles an hour in a go cart. And if that's not fast enough for you try an enduro cart and reach top speeds of 90 mph. Or race in a shifter cart at an astounding 160 mph. Don't start sweating yet, you don't have to go that fast to have fun. You can drive in any level or class that you feel comfortable with.

But this brings up some questions: With go carts speeding down the track so fast these days, are they too dangerous to drive? Can you travel as fast as 100 mph and still be safe? The answer is yes and no. Sure, you can still be safe, but without following certain safety rules you can increase your chances of serious injury. It's not necessarily the fast speeds that cause the serious accidents, but the unsafe or inexperienced drivers.

The first rule of the road is to remain in your comfort zone. This is easier said then done however because racing is not for the timid. At some point, when you want to move up to a more experienced level or class, you may not feel equipped to do that. However, by building up your confidence in the lower classes you will eventually be ready for more competition. Just don't try to move up faster than your driving expertise allows.

Back in the olden days, when go carts were extremely slow, you could go racing safely without a helmet. Those days are long gone. Even in kiddie tracks helmets are a requirement now. The helmet is perhaps the most important piece of equipment that a go cart driver will ever use. There are other pieces of equipment that are necessary too, but none more important than a high-quality helmet. In the event of a crash it can spare you from a serious head injury.

To a great extent you can control the amount of danger that you are faced with. Many decisions that you make before climbing into the cart will determine how safe it will be for you out on the track. From the type of clothes you wear to the type of go cart you buy will help determine your safety level on the track. By taking every safety precaution that you possibly can you will lessen your risk of sustaining a serious injury. So do your homework and be prepared. It's a lot more fun racing go carts when you can walk away after a race instead of having to be driven away in an ambulance.

The importance of clothing can't be overstated. The slower you race the less important clothing becomes, but the faster your go cart goes the more you need to be sure you are clothed properly. Depending on your speeds certain clothing may help spare you from serious injury. At faster speeds fire safety suits are a must. There is ignitable fuel in your vehicle and in the event of a crash it is possible for it to catch fire. Preventing burns is a very desirable thing. Other indispensable gear includes fire-resistant racing shoes to protect your feet and gloves for your hands.

All go carts today have roll bars that extend higher than the driver's head. The chassis of the go cart will either be open or caged. A caged go cart has a cage that covers the driver. It protects the driver in the event of a rollover. It serves the same purpose as a roll bar. Most tracks demand a cage for safety. Go carts also have side bars that can protect you from serious injury should another driver ram you from the side. You have to remember, you could be the greatest driver in the world, but you're not out there alone. You are driving with others whose skill levels may leave a lot to be desired. So buying a quality go cart is always a good idea.

By taking these few simple precautions it will improve your chances of having fun out on the track by lessening your chances of becoming injured. Go carts can be just about as safe as you make them. With some practice and experience there is no reason why any driver can't move up the ranks safely. Keep safety as your number one goal and go carting will be fun for many years to come.

GM Extended Warranty - Whats In It?

An extended warranty is a contract between you and a service provider. Many people purchase extended auto warranties to shield themselves against the costs resulting from mechanical breakdown or failure to their vehicle. The extent of coverage, benefits, and terms of payment are particular to each individual contract. An auto extended warranty give you're the right level of coverage. Although the main advantage of obtaining a car warranty is to avoid high costs of automobile repairs, many plans come with additional benefits.

You can buy warranties that are specific to the manufacturers. For example, you can buy a GM extended warranty. All GM cars and trucks have a full manufacturer’s warranty for a term of 3 years and 36,000 Miles. The GM Warranty is transferable at no cost to an unlimited number of owners. Roadside assistance is also provided during the basic warranty period. If you want more protection than this, you can get a GM extended warranty that covers your vehicle after the manufacturer’s full warranty ends up to 100,000 miles if you choose.

A GM extended warranty covers almost every major component on the vehicle. Usually, a GM extended warranty will also include roadside assistance and rental vehicles. Another feature on a GM extended warranty is that it begins the day you purchase it, not from the original in-service date. This means you get use of the GM extended warranty for the full term represented. A GM extended warranty can be used at any GM dealership or licensed repair garage.

A GM extended warranty provides you with comprehensive coverage that gives you the peace-of-mind when driving a GM. You don’t have to worry about your GM vehicle if your original warranty is up. Say you are driving your GM for four years, it overheats, and your original, 3-year warranty is up. If you have a GM extended warranty, it’s not a problem! Just take your vehicle to a GM dealer or a GM-licensed repair garage, and your car will be worked on and fixed under warranty.

The small cost for this added benefit is nothing compared to the peace-of-mind you will have knowing your vehicle is covered.

GM Death Watch: It Ain’t Gonna Happen!

I have been enjoying reading the news these past few days, perhaps in a perverse sort of way. Pundits and prognosticators are all forecasting the pending doom of the world’s largest automaker as if the approaching layoffs and restructuring are signaling the venerable automaker’s end. Certainly, GM has some problems – big ones – but the company isn’t likely to go away or even file for bankruptcy. The news isn’t all that it seems to be on this subject either…GM will survive and likely thrive in the decades ahead.

Okay, I am not crazy. Could GM go away? Of course, as could any poorly managed company. Yes, executives are overpaid and so are union workers. There…I said it. GM has been taking it on the chin from Asian automakers for three decades now and their U.S. market share continues to dwindle. Still, it isn’t doomsday for the general. Far from it. Here are some things that I believe GM is attempting to do to as they restructure.

Reduced Legacy Costs – GM won an important battle with its unions to force workers and retirees to pony up more money for their share of rising healthcare costs. Before you cry “foul” most Americans are paying heavily for their health insurance, while most autoworkers pay little or nothing. Reportedly, GM’s legacy costs add $1500 to the price of every vehicle. Hardly a way for any company to compete, right?

Divisional Trimming – GM axed Oldsmobile and is, supposedly, looking at whether Pontiac or Buick should go next. Saturn looks safe, primarily because of the division’s excellent dealer network while Chevrolet is the household name for so many car owners and is, therefore, untouchable. Cadillac is once again doing well and is competing effectively against Mercedes, BMW, Lexus, and Infiniti. Cadillac easily outsells rival Lincoln more than 2 to 1.

Captive Imports – I mentioned in a related article that China’s Chery Automotive Company will be importing a line of vehicles to the US commencing in Summer 2007. With a starting price as low as $6995, there is no way that GM can compete with them. Neither can Ford, Toyota, Honda, or Nissan for that matter. So, what is the option? Import one or two ultra low priced lines of cars from Korea via the company’s Daewoo division. Currently, the $9995 Chevy Aveo is the low price king in the US. This Daewoo built model is being overhauled and the new model should arrive in the US in about one year. Expect the price to drop as GM prepares for Chery’s onslaught. Expect GM to pressure their unions for further give backs as American highways are soon flooded with cheap Chinese imports.

Operational Spread -- The US auto market is the most lucrative in the world. Expect GM to strengthen luxury brands including Cadillac and Hummer as many of these vehicles bring in profits of ten thousand dollars or more per vehicle. Gas prices are coming down and America’s thirst for profitable trucks and SUVs has hardly been quenched. Still, look for GM to do a few hybrids, add some more diesels, and continue researching hydrogen production.

Union members should be alarmed by all these looming changes. Cutbacks will happen but they will only be wider and deeper if union opposition remains so strong. Yes, the unions could kill off the general, but that would be suicide for the workers. Better to pick whatever battles you can win and hope for the best.

The general isn’t dead and it hardly is dying despite everything you read and hear [personally, I believe GM is beating the “we’re getting clobbered” drum to squeeze out more give backs from the unions]. Globalism is changing the way business is done and it would do all of us good to wake up to that fact…like it or not.

    GM: Solutions For Effective Change

I, like so many people who have been following General Motors’ fortunes for some time, am wondering what the company’s long term plan of action is in the face of historic losses, plant closings, and unrelenting and widening competition. No, I am not talking about GM’s global operations, rather I am talking about the North American fortunes of the world’s largest automaker. Quite frankly, the North American market is currently unprofitable for the company while GM holds its own, even thrives, in many markets beyond our borders. The following are some suggestions to help “The General” not only get back on its feet again, but to halt the bleeding in North America.

File For Bankruptcy -- It is time to play hardball with recalcitrant unions and government authorities who don’t understand that GM is playing on an uneven field. Toyota, Honda, Nissan, and Hyundai all build cars in the U.S. None of them are saddled by huge legacy costs, i.e. health and pension benefits, local tax burdens, etc. Yes, GM negotiated their contracts in good faith, however the market has changed tremendously over the past several decades and is wholly unfavorable to the way GM has been doing business since then. In addition, GM often operates at a disadvantage in foreign markets as local laws limit their ability to effectively sell their vehicles.

Quit Building Small Cars -- All small cars built by GM should no longer be built in the U.S. This includes the Saturn ION and Chevrolet Cobalt. Instead, GM should rely on imports. By tapping its relationship with Daewoo of South Korea, GM can bring in enough cheaply made models to remain competitive and to give consumers affordable transportation under the Saturn, Chevrolet, and Pontiac nameplates. Use factories in Canada and the U.S. to build larger cars and trucks only. GM has been successfully selling the Chevy Aveo, a Daewoo model, and can easily sell other models at competitive prices. This practice would be especially wise as cheaply priced Chinese cars begin to hit the North American market in 2007.

Shore Up The Divisions Unlike some who think that GM has too many divisions, I disagree. Better to clarify your existing divisions than to go through the costly and negative closing of existing divisions. The Oldsmobile termination was a huge financial drain on the company and ended up fueling hostility against the company. Therefore, this is what I propose for GM:

    1. Cadillac – GM’s luxury division is riding high and no changes need to be made. Keep producing distinguishable high quality luxury cars and Cadillac will continue to compete against the likes of Lexus, Mercedes, BMW, and Infiniti. Cadillac outsells Lincoln by more than 2 to 1 and the division performs well in all consumer quality and satisfaction surveys.

    2. Buick – As the “near luxury” division for GM, Buick must create a viable alternative to Cadillac without sacrificing quality or confusing consumers. Bring back in a “halo” model like the Regal to show Buick’s youthful side.

    3. Pontiac – Unless the Firebird returns, Pontiac’s performance image is gone for good. Pontiac needs this car and it must be different from the proposed Chevy Camaro. Besides Saab, Pontiac is the one division that needs the most work when it comes to reinventing itself.

    4. Chevrolet – Keep up what you have, but rely on imports to fill the lower end of the market. Redo the Impala to help it compete successfully against the Chrysler 300, Toyota Camry, and Honda Accord. Yes, bring back the Camaro!

    5. Saturn – Moving in the right direction, Saturn should chiefly sell cars that are Opel inspired. Give the car a more European flair and the division will succeed. The Sky is a knock out and the Opel inspired Aura is a vast improvement over the old “L” Series model. Keep the strong dealer network in place and Saturn will compete successfully against Hyundai, Honda, Toyota, Nissan, and others.

    6. Saab – GM’s Swedish division is floundering and may be cut. Better yet, let the division sell upscale versions of Opel models and please do not throw out the Swedish touch: safety and durability. Unfortunately, GM hasn’t been as kind to its Swedish company as Ford has been to its Volvo subsidiary.

    7. GMC – Between Chevy and GMC, no manufacturer sells more passengers trucks then this division. Likely, nothing will change, but coming out with a more capable small pick up truck would go along way in helping GMC and Chevy. Also, redo the Equinox to be a real battler against the Ford Escape and Toyota RAV4.

    8. Hummer – GM’s niche division is the Hummer and little needs to be changed other than to add an H4, a compact Hummer. With the H4, give the division something to go with that can battle the Jeep Wrangler. Hummer will always be perceived as the company’s gas guzzling company, but it is also profitable for the corporation.

Personally, I do not want the bankruptcy route to be exercised as I know that so many suppliers would be left out in the cold, jobs lost, and goodwill would take a hit for at least the short term. Still, aggressive action – even beyond plant closings and layoffs – must be considered otherwise GM will be relegated to operating as a second rate player in North America while pursuing its fortunes abroad. In my opinion, neglecting the profitable North American market would be a shame and very costly.

Give Those Microscopic Hitchhikers The Brush-Off

You might think your car or truck is clean. However, most drivers are carrying around a dirty little secret and don't even know it. That's why keeping the interior of your vehicle clean is important, especially for people with allergies.

"Keeping your vehicle interior clear of dust, liquids and other particles is one of the most overlooked areas of vehicle maintenance," said Peter Lord, executive director, GM Service Operations. "Neglecting interior cleanliness can lead to health and sanitary concerns."

Cleanliness in our kitchens, hotel rooms and restaurants has been a hot topic, but many people forget to take the simple steps needed to keep the interiors of their vehicle clean. This is particularly important given the amount of time most people spend in their vehicles. The average American generally spends up to 2.5 hours per day driving, according to a Yankelovich Monitor Study. That's almost 38 days out of the year.

Allergens like pollen, as well as bacteria, are just some of the substances that invade our vehicles. Traveling with a pet can add hair and dander to the mix. In addition, residues from road dust, soot, pesticides, and other chemicals collect in car and truck interiors, entering through ventilation ducts or open windows and doors.

Here are a few tips to help eliminate these "invaders":

    • Use disinfectant to wipe down the steering wheel, instrument panel, door handles and other frequently used areas regularly. Remember to clean the interior of the vehicle each time you wash the outside.

    • Keep interior surfaces clean by vacuuming seats, carpet and floor mats regularly.

    • Replace your vehicle's cabin air filter, if equipped, when recommended by the owner's manual. If you drive in high-traffic or dusty areas, consider replacing the filter more often. The GM Goodwrench Cabin Air Filter blocks most allergens that enter a vehicle's ventilation system.

    • You may also ask your technician to clean and disinfect the air-conditioning system with a Cooling-Coil Coating. This product has an odor eliminator and inhibits the growth of odor-causing microorganisms.

But cleaning is about more than keeping the interior clean. Service items such as air filters, oil changes, fluids, brakes, windshield wipers and your air conditioner are also worth inspecting and/or replacing.

For extra confidence on the road, motorists can bring their vehicles to a GM dealership for a multipoint vehicle inspection. These inspections help identify service items that can help vehicles run better, last longer and retain their value.

The technicians are ASE-certified and nearly 7,000 dealerships nationwide offer the service.

    What is a Multipoint

    Vehicle Inspection?

Convenient, efficient, multipoint inspections are available for vehicles, comprehensive diagnostic testing and complete service capabilities to help customers keep their vehicles operating properly. Dealerships offer the following inspection services:

    • Transmission, drive shaft and u-joints

    • Radiator, heater and air-conditioning hoses

    • Interior lights, exterior lamps, brake lamps, turn signals and hazard-warning lights

    • Exhaust system

    • Engine air cleaner filter

    • Suspension and steering system components.

Goodwrench is the service brand for GM vehicles. With dealerships located nationwide, the GM Goodwrench network is one of the largest automotive service chains in the industry. The technicians receive specialized training to provide expert care for cars and trucks. Genuine replacement parts are manufactured to the exact specifications of the vehicle.

    Getting "Fueled-Up" For Summer Driving

As temperatures begin to rise, so does the anticipation of being able to drive with the windows down and the wind blowing in your hair during America's hottest season. Amid today's ever-changing fuel landscape, it is important for drivers to educate themselves about how to make smarter decisions for their vehicles-especially during the summer months. Car owners, it is time to get "fueled-up" for summer driving.

Cars, like their drivers, require proper maintenance and replenished fluids in order to be prepared for the sweltering summer heat. Lauren Fix, The Car Coach®, a nationally recognized automotive expert, shares some tips for consumers on how to keep their cars performing at their best throughout the summertime.

    • Inspect the cooling system. Prevent your car's engine from rapid overheating by inspecting its cooling system. Make sure to keep an eye on the coolant level-if low, refill using a 50/50 mixture of water and antifreeze. If your antifreeze is dirty or weak, have your cooling system flushed at your local auto repair shop. Also, while you're there, have your auto technician test the cooling fan and thermostat for proper operation and repair or replace as needed.

    • Fill up with quality fuel. When at the pump, be sure to rejuvenate with a quality fuel such as Amoco Ultimate® premium fuel at BP. With continuous use, it can help clean-up dirty engines by cutting away deposits from intake valves. A cleaner engine can give your car better performance-ensuring less hesitation and smoother acceleration. It may even help improve your gas mileage for a more cost-efficient summer road trip.

    • Replenish fluids. Don't let your car dehydrate; make sure that all fluids are replenished accordingly. Remember to check and/or replace the transmission, brake, washer and power-steering fluids. All can be easily located by reviewing your owner's manual, or consulting your local auto technician for expert help.

    • Examine the AC system. The air temperature coming from the air conditioning ducts should be approximately 35 to 45 degrees Fahrenheit. If not, you should have it inspected by a licensed AC repair facility or your local auto technician where they will inspect for leaks, repair them and recharge the system with the proper amount of Freon for your vehicle.

    • Change your oil more often. Start the season off with premium motor oil for maximum engine protection. This is especially important in the summer because hot weather requires extra lubrication for the engine.

Get Your ATV in Top Shape for Spring

Spring is just around the corner. You know how it is: One minute you're adding antifreeze, and the next you're wiping spots of sap off the car hood.

After being cooped up all winter, the temptation to hit the road- or go off-road - with the first breath of a warm breeze is overwhelming.

Before you take off on a whim, however, think for a moment about your all-terrain vehicle. How is the tire pressure and coolant level? Is the vehicle clean?

Polaris, a leading manufacturer of ATVs, offers the following tips to get your vehicle in top shape before hitting the trails:

    * Be sure to do a "walk-around" of your unit, checking air filter, coolant level, battery, tire pressure, operation of lights, tire pressure and operation of throttle and brakes. Also, check and drain fuel.

    * Clean the vehicle and inspect for damage. Be sure fasteners are tight.

    * After any storage period an ATV should have a complete tuneup. Call your local dealer early to beat the spring rush.

    * To prevent damage to springs and blown seals caused by mud, dirt and trail debris, install shock covers. If already installed, check to make sure they are still offering full protection. If they are not, replace them.

    * Don't forget to check your protective gear - helmet, eye gear, boots, gloves and apparel- to ensure it will offer ultimate protection.

    Get Ready for Summer Driving

The busy summer driving season is coming. Will your vehicle be ready?

The experts at the nonprofit National Institute for Automotive Service Excellence (ASE) offer the following tips on getting your vehicle ready.

    * Read the owner's manual and follow the recommended service schedules.

    * If you are not a do-it-yourselfer, look for an orderly repair facility with modern equipment in the service bays. Also, look for evidence of qualified automotive technicians, such as trade-school diplomas, certificates of advanced course work and training, as well as national certification of the individual technicians by ASE.

    * Flush and refill the cooling system according to the service manual's recommendations. The level, condition and concentration of the coolant should be checked periodically. Make sure the engine has cooled down before removing the radiator cap.

    * Have engine performance problems -- hard starts, rough idling, stalling -- corrected. You'll get better gasoline mileage and could prevent more expensive repairs.

    * Have a qualified auto technician check the tightness and condition of belts, clamps and hoses. You should stay on the lookout for signs of wear, cracking or fraying.

    * Likewise, have a faulty air-conditioner system serviced by a technician qualified to handle refrigerants. Older units often contain ozone-depleting chemicals that could be released into the air through improper or incompetent service.

    * Change the oil and oil filter as specified in the owner's manual. This simple service alone can increase the life of your vehicle. Replace other filters as recommended in the service manual.

    * Check the condition of tires, including the spare. Let the tires "cool down" before checking their pressure. Uneven wear, "cupping," vibrations or pulling to one side indicate problems with your tires or suspension system.

    * Don't neglect your transmission. Costly repairs can be prevented by routine service.

    * Inspect all lights and bulbs; replace burned-out bulbs.

    * Replace worn wiper blades and keep plenty of washer solvent on hand to fight summer's dust and insects.

ASE was founded in 1972 to improve the quality of automotive service and repair through the voluntary testing and certification of automotive technicians. ASE-certified technicians wear blue-and-white ASE shoulder insignia and carry credentials listing their exact areas of certification. Their employers often display the ASE sign.

    Get away from it all

Haven't you ever had time you wanted to get away from it all? In March/April 1978, www.motherearthnews.com published a story about a couple who bought McLeod's Island — a 90-acre island off the coast of Cape Breton Island, Nova Scotia, Canada.

They have a few animals, spend very little on groceries, and are pretty well sustained by the island itself. Although it does present them with some challenges:

"The sea, you know, is not called "restless" for nothing. A glass-smooth bay (as we've learned so well!) can churn-sometimes seemingly in seconds-into a windswept chaos of currents and combers. We've also seen that same bay (the one in which our island is located) thaw and then completely refreeze in just hours on a single December day.

Winters up here can be especially variable. Continual spring-like thaws throughout 1976's cold season, for instance, kept our bay filled with slushy ice that was too thick to push a boat through ... but too dangerous for even a fox to walk on. We were marooned for three full months, from the first of January until the end of March. Last winter's record cold snap, on the other hand, filled the bay so solidly with pack ice that we could hike back and forth to the mainland for our mail and toboggan loads of supplies any time we wanted."

For some of us, we find the Internet gives us the freedom to be able to work and live almost any place we want to. These people didn't have that luxury. I use the past tense as I can't find any current information about them. Who knows? Maybe the tide swept the out to sea.

Life is full of sacrifices. Some are just more dear than others. Still, I don't think buying an island is in my future.

    General Vehicle Maintenance

Regular vehicle maintenance or preventative maintenance, if you will, can go a long way in making sure your vehicle runs at optimal condition. For example, no one truly enjoys the trips to a mechanic because our brake pads are worn down to the rotors or drums and we have to spend more time and dollars to repair the brake system. What little time it takes to make sure we do the "regular" things to our vehicle, makes the time well spent. The pay me now or pay me later cliché, in this case, is never more true. The following tips will aid you in keeping your vehicle ready to take you wherever you have to go.

Enough can’t be said about regular oil changes and oil filter replacement. Personally, I have oil changes every 2,000 miles. The recommended schedule is every 3, 000 miles. Because of my prompt attention to regular oil and filter changes, I have a 1978 Buick LeSabre with 195,000 miles on it and in 2006 it still runs like a dream. It should go without saying but a lubing of the chassis or "lube job" some call it, should be performed at the same time you have the oil changed.

The air filter, when dirty, is a common problem when you notice your car has less power and is using more fuel. A simple check of the filter will give you an idea of how dirty it is. Mechanics will almost always agree that this simple step can go a long way in improving your vehicle’s performance. Air filters are instrumental in decreasing the amount of dirt, dust and other damaging contaminants going into the engine. Simply put, your vehicle runs less efficiently when the filter is clogged with dirt and grime. Filters should be replaced every 3,000 miles. Also, have the air filter changed when you have an oil change performed on the vehicle to save time or an extra trip to the mechanic.

And while we’re talking about filters, the fuel filter is probably the most overlooked or forgotten item for regular checkups. Auto experts don’t understand why this happens but it does. Remember the Buick I just mentioned? I have had the fuel pumps and fuel filters checked regularly on that vehicle. I can honestly say I get approximately two more miles to the gallon when I calculate mpg/number of gallons of fuel used after I have replaced a fuel filter. Whenever you happen to notice or think to yourself, "I sure am using more gas lately", check the fuel filter.

Regular replacement of the brake pads is also very important. Many expert mechanics will agree that all parts to the brake system are the most important safety features on an automobile. You must be able to stop your vehicle quickly and safely. All brake pads will wear out eventually. If you start hearing squealing like sounds or the feel of the pedal upon braking is "mushy", you need to consider that the brake pads are beginning to become worn out. The responsibility of the brake pads is to provide friction with the pad to make braking or stopping possible. Brake pads can be easily diagnosed for wear and tear with regular examinations.

operating in a dance with the distributor and ignition coils. Many things can indicate problems and spark plug wire malfunction. There may be corrosion at the wires or connectors. Resistance can increase as the wires get older. The material encasing the wires may be shredding or wearing out.

The first sign of trouble generally comes when you start noticing a missing or stuttering type action when the vehicle is operating. There’s a significant tugging like symptom that feels to you that your vehicle can’t get the energy to move. Always keep your spark plug wires clean. Always troubleshoot for wires that look worn out or are not properly applied to the spark plugs. Replacing your spark plug wires will mean efficient starting and less ignition type problems that can follow because of worn spark plug wires.

Wash Me! Well maybe this one isn’t actually vehicle "maintenance" per se, but doesn’t a clean vehicle make you feel better? Again, have you ever noticed the vehicle seems to run smoother when she’s clean? Having the engine steam cleaned on a regular maintenance plan can also go a long way in extending the life of your engine. Engine cleaning will keep the corrosion and grime from building up on your spark plug wires too. It will help when you are looking over your engine for leaks, unplugged or loose wiring and keep the corrosion off your vehicle’s battery.

While these aren’t the only "regular maintenance" tips available, you can always research your vehicle’s handbook for other ideas that can help extend its life and keep it running in optimal condition.

    Gas Scooter Safety

    By Flemming Andersen

Having a gas scooter means that you need to take the necessary precautions and learn how to use it safely. You will need to be responsible and make sure that you do a few things before you decide to get on a gas scooter and ride. You want to use common sense to make sure that you are not hurt or even worse.

You should make sure that you are wearing the proper gear each time you ride your gas scooter. Safety is very important and there are few necessities that you will have to have in order to make that happen. You need to make sure that you can be seen on the scooter. You should wear bright and reflective clothing. This will make you more noticeable to other people on the road. You need to make sure that you have reflective helmets as well.

It is important to wear helmets and kneepads as well. You will need to protect every part of your body when you are on a gas scooter. You should have elbow pads, wrist guards, gloves and good shoes on your feet too. You have to make sure that you are protected well so that you do not get hurt in case you are ever in an accident.

The next thing that you need to do is check your scooters equipment. A scooter will need to have more attention than a car. You need to make sure that everything is in good working order before you start to ride. You should check the nuts and bolts and make sure that the steering is working properly. It is also important to inspect the brakes and all the controls of the scooter. Check the frame to make sure that everything is in tact. Always look at the tires and check them for wear and tear. This is a very important part of a scooter and they should be checked often.

Always know your gas scooter before you ride. Read and understand all the instructions before you ride. Take note to all the safety and warning labels on the scooter as well. Check the controls and ride cautiously even after you are familiar with the scooter.

Another thing to remember when you are riding your gas scooter is to obey all the laws in your area. Know where you are allowed to ride and watch for other motor vehicles. Do not ride in bad weather whenever possible. You should also be aware of riding at night. Never go out on your gas scooter at night without your reflective gear.

When you ride safe and obey the rules, you will get a lot of use from your gas scooter. You will be able to enjoy the scooter for a long time and it will make your life a lot easier while adding some fun to it as well.

    Gas Mileage Savers

Gas mileage savers can be defined as anything that helps you save money on gas. As many of you know, the price of gas is going up and there is no end in site. In this article, you will learn about some gas mileage savers that will certainly help you save money.

There are many simple ways to save money on gas. The first is to plan your driving ahead of time. By planning ahead, you can combine multiple trips and tasks into one. For example, plan to go to the grocery store or pharmacy before picking the kids up from school or on the way home from work. Try to carpool with co-workers as often as possible. The more people in your carpool, the more money you will save. These gas mileage savers are sure to save you time and money.

Another way to save money at the pump is to watch the way you drive. Do you start and stop quickly between intersections? Accelerating quickly and braking hard both use more gas than accelerating smoothly and coasting between lights at intersections. Though we can't control the traffic lights, we can control how we drive between them. This is a great tip for city driving that will improve your fuel consumption.

On the highway, you can improve your gas mileage as well. Using the cruise control and staying within the speed-limit will cut down on your fuel consumption. Cruise control helps you maintain a more constant speed than you can do yourself, which translates to better mileage. On long drives, cruise control is the key to better fuel efficiency. But what about the speed limit? While the speed limit is for your safety, it is also one of the lesser known gas mileage savers. The faster you drive, the harder your car has to work. After about 65 MPH, the efficiency of your car begins to drop drastically. So, keeping your speed in check will keep your gas bill under control too.

Maintaining your car and keeping your car free of excess clutter are two more gas mileage savers to be aware of. By keeping up with the regular maintenance of your car, you'll keep it running efficiently, which means burning less gas. Things to keep an eye on, either by you or a professional, include properly inflated tires, a clean air filter, and regular oil changes and tune-ups. Improperly inflated tires can reduce your fuel efficiency, as can clogged air filters. A clean running, properly maintained engine will be more efficient. Removing excess clutter from your car can also help your mileage. Extra weight in the trunk or bed of your truck or SUV means more gas being burned during everyday driving.

Another gas mileage savers option is to drive a more fuel efficient car. Hybrid cars, cars that run on battery and regular petroleum, can help you save money at the pump too. By using various energy saving techniques, such as cutting the gas engine when the car is idle and using an energy return system when the car is braking, reduce the amount of gasoline used. If a hybrid car is not your thing, you can also try a diesel car, or simply a smaller car. Smaller cars weight less and typically have smaller engines than trucks and SUV's. If hauling a big load around is not a typical daily task for you, then, a smaller sedan or coupe will save you big bucks in gas. Diesel engines, too, get very good gas mileage. It is not atypical for a diesel engine to get more than 40 miles per gallon. So, the next time you're deciding which car to drive or buy, remember these gas mileage savers!

Americans have always loved driving their cars, but with gas prices the way they are, driving is not as cheap as it used to be. Remembering the gas mileage savers in this article will help you drive around without breaking the bank. Find other similar articles

    Gas

In the U.S., gas is the short form of gasoline, while in many Commonwealth countries, it is known as petrol. Gas is a petroleum-derived liquid mixture that consists of hydrocarbons and is used as a fuel in internal combustion engines.

There are different types of gasoline in the fuel industry. Small aircrafts use specially formulated, high-octane aviation gasoline, which cannot be used for ground vehicles. Vehicles involved in racing use specially formulated racing gasoline that has very low levels of benzene and an anti-knock index of at least 100. Gasoline used for scientific research has unusual properties, which depend on the nature of the research. Cars with gasoline engines use E85 gasoline that is a blend of 85% fuel ethanol and 15% gasoline. The reason gasoline is added here is to provide a good start and warm up performance to the car, which is possible because of ethanol’s low volatility.

The diesel engine cars or cars with compression ignition engines use E95 gasoline that is a blend of 95% fuel ethanol and 5% gasoline. No more than 5% gasoline should be added because this may lower the flash point to unacceptable levels. E85 cannot be used in diesel applications, and neither can E95 be used in gasoline engines because of the different types of engines.

It is always better to buy gas during the coolest times of the day, like early morning or late evening as this is when gas is found at its densest. Gas pumps measure according to volume of gasoline and not density of fuel concentration, so you have an advantage here. It is better not to fill your gas tank to the top as overfilling results in the sloshing over of the gasoline out of the tank. Gas has to be chosen wisely for use in vehicles because some brands have greater economy due to its better quality. It is always better to use brands that seem to be beneficial. To save gas, it is better to avoid too much warming up of the engine, even on cold mornings. About thirty or forty-five seconds of warming up is more than enough. Avoid unnecessary starting and stopping of the engine. You use the same amount of gas here as you would in idling the engine for one minute. Use gas wisely, as it is an unrenewable fuel source that will always be needed by mankind.
