Minor Car Accidents - A Minute By Minute Survival Guide

What do you do if you have a minor collision with another vehicle on the road? First 30 seconds: 1.Stay in the car. 2.Put your emergency flashers and headlights on full beam. 3.Switch off the engine. 4.Apply the handbrake. 5.Take deep breaths. 6.Check your passengers, especially children and old people are OK. Second 30 seconds, if no-one is more than shaken up: 1.Check for signs of aggression from the other driver 2.If other driver is aggressive, stay in the car and ring the police. 3.If other driver is behaving in a reasonable way then open your door and get out. 4.Remember that everyone has elevated adrenaline levels in this situation and strive to think - calm. 5.Call the police Next 4 minutes: 1.Consider whether your passengers are safer inside the car or outside. 2.Ask nearby drivers for their details and if they would be willing to act as witnesses. 3.Talk to the other driver, but never admit any responsibility for the accident. 4.Leave the car where it is, until the police have arrived, even if it is causing an obstruction. Next 5 minutes: 1.Take photographs of cars and licence plates. Discretely try to include the other driver in your shots. 2.Take photos of the junction and road layout where the accident happened. Include road condition and weather. 3.Make notes. Was the other car driving with headlights? Was the other driver wearing glasses, or sunglasses? Did the other driver seem distracted by children or anything else in the car. Was the other driver drinking, using a phone or smoking when theaccident happened? Next 15 minutes: 1.By now the police should have arrived. Answer their questions and stay calm. 2.Tell the police officer of any observations that are relevant, such as if the other driver was using a phone, or had no lights on. 3.Move your vehicle once the police officer has completed any measurements or other necessary observations. 4.Ask the police officer what the next stage is. Will there be any prosecution? 5.The police officer may give you an indication whether your vehicle is safe to drive home. 6.Make sure the police officer gives you an Incident Number and his or her name and number. 7.If your vehicle cannot be driven call a vehicle recovery service. Later: Call your insurance company and ask for a list of autobody repair facilities that they deal with in your area. Find help at http://www.autobody-repairs.info Your insurer will almost certainly have a list of Approved Repairers. These will be companies that the insurer has found inspected and found acceptable. Many companies will inflate estimates if they know that the bill is going to be paid by an insurance company. The estimates provided by Approved Repairers have been judged reasonable and uninflated. The workshop receives a large part of its business from the insurance companies so are well motivated to stick to their rules, and not to add on damage repairs not arising from the insured accident. To receive approval status the bodyshop will need to have jigs, paint-shops and ovens to heat the painted parts to ensure the work is up to the original quality. While your car is in the bodyshop, ask them for estimates to make good any other body work damage that has not arisen from the accident. You will have to pay for this yourself, but the price is likely to be lower than if you just drove in off the street to have those jobs done.

Simple Ways To Avoid A Car Accident

Everyone who is a driver should be concerned with learning ways to drive safer and to avoid getting in a car accident. There is no reason why drivers shouldn't be cautious and aware of the possibilities for danger that come with being on the road. There are many simple ways to avoid a car accident when you are on the road. One of the most important steps to take in avoiding a car accident is to pay attention to driving! I see and hear about far too many drivers who are attempting to do multiple things at one time. For example, I saw a lady driving yesturday who was also in the middle of putting her makeup on. There is no way that she was fully aware of what she was doing or of the potential danger she was to everyone else on the road. People can get distracted from driving by a variety of things, so they need to re-focus on driving and on avoiding an accident. The use of cell phones is one of the biggest problems for drivers and one of the biggest causes of car accidents in the past few years. Some states are catching onto this and are banning drivers from talking on cell phones while they drive. If you absolutely need to talk while you drive, then you should purchase a headset so that your hands will be free to drive and help you to avoid an accident on the road. Trying to carry on a deep or meaningful conversation with other people in your vehicle can also be a serious cause of distraction and hence of a car accident. If you are driving with a full car of passengers, remind them that your job and responsibility is to drive safely and to avoid a car accident for the sake of all who are on the road. Ask that they refrain from beginning serious conversations with you that will require your full attention. Music and other radio programs can also be big distractions to drivers and lead them into a car accident. Be intentional about the things you choose to listen to when you drive. Be sure that you don't choose anything that will be too much of a distraction to you. Instead, choose soft music or programs that will allow you to fully focus on the road and on not getting in a car accident. When you are driving, your highest responsibility is to do just that: drive. Avoid a car accident at all costs and save your phone calls and deep conversations for one you are off the road.

Drive Safely: Your Life Depends On It

At least 41,000 highway fatalities have been recorded in the United States every year since 1993. Deaths by car accident are usually caused by negligence, carelessness, and other factors such as drunk driving. Two famous people who met their untimely death by car accident include American Hollywood icon James Dean and Princess Diana.

Death on the road

James Dean was driving west on Highway 466 near Cholame, California when a 1950 Ford Tudor, driven from the opposite direction, attempted to take the fork onto the Highway 466 route (later called California State Route 46) and crossed into James Deans' lane without seeing the other car. The two cars collided head-on. Dean was taken rushed to a hospital but was pronounced dead on arrival.

In 1997, Princess Diana died after a high speed car accident in the Pon d'Alma road tunnel in Paris along with Dodi Al-Fayed. The car they were riding on was trying to elude paparazzi. Their black Mercedes-Benz crashed into the thirteenth pillar of the tunnel. Princess Diana and Dodi Al-Fayed died of injuries sustained during the terrible car accident.

If any good came out of these tragedies, it was that more people became aware of the dangers of irresponsible driving. The news of the deaths of James Dean and Princess Diana came as a warning to people who were reckless with their driving. It also served as a caution to those who were careful in the way they drive in the sense that they were educated that even the most careful of drivers can get into accidents because of irresponsible motorists.

TIPS TO PREVENT CAR ACCIDENTS

Even you are a careful driver there are circumstances beyond your control. However, taking precautionary measures is a big help to avoid car accidents. Here are these tips on driving more safely:

1. DON'T USE THE CELL PHONE WHILE DRIVING- Haven't you heard from the news all because of this handy dandy gadget, you find yourself more than what you bargain for. Is that call that important? Can't it wait? Certainly, you are bound to be distracted. Its even more dangerous when you are using the expressway.
2. DO A CAR CHECK REGULARLY- As much as possible, any car requires regular maintenance. Check your brakes, tires, mirrors, lights and even the windshield wiper.
3. SCAN AHEAD- Fix your eyes and scan for car's up head.
4. BE CONSIDERATE- When you tend to slowed down, put your flashers on to alert drivers behind you when they see you slowing down.
5. DON'T ACT LIKE A RACE CAR DRIVER- If you act like “Mel Gibson” as the road warrior Mad Max chances are you're courting for disaster
6. KNOW YOUR CAR'S LIMITATIONS- Not all cars are exactly alike the minivan don't go so fast like an exotic sports car. There is a performance limits of every car. Know its capabilities.
7. KEEP YOUR CAR IN GOOD SHAPE- Have a maintenance schedule.
8. NIGHTTIME IS NOT BEST TIME- If you need to travel in a very long distance—nighttime is when you hazards usually happens. You are already in the state of mental and physical fatigue. Your line of vision might already decreased. Drive so carefully at this witching hour and keep your headlights on.

9. WHEN YOU DRINK DON'T DRIVE AND VICE VERSA- It is a big mortal sin if you do...being drunk while driving is like you're planning to have a date with “Death” so soon.
10. KEEP YOUR CAR NEAT AND TIDY- A messy car is another one way ticket to road accident. Why? If you leave some objects around and it slides or roll under your brake pedal, your attention was taken off the road and what happens next you lose control of the car.

Those tips might not be fool proof against road accidents but nevertheless, an once of prevention is better than none. A vehicle is one invention; man can't live without. But if its not use wisely then it might cause the one precious thing most people value here on earth and that is----LIFE!

Avoid A Car Accident!

One of the most tragic things that we too often hear about in almost every city in the world is car accidents. It seems like hardly a week goes by when I do not see on the news or read about a fatal or near fatal car accident that happened somewhere. I have been plagued with thinking about the tragedy of car accidents all week long. Last week a fatal car accident happened in my hometown that took the lives of three teenagers.

Most drivers know ways to avoid a car accident, but how many drivers consciously practice safe driving methods each time they are behind the wheel? I'd say very few. Very rarely are our minds actually focused on driving. We are busily running from errand to errand just trying to keep on top of the plans of our day. We are talking on cell phones and trying to do way too many things at once. It is no wonder that car accidents are happening with increasing frequency when we look at the increasing busyness and need for multi-tasking in our society today.

One of the key ways to avoid a car accident is for you, as a driver, to really pay attention to the task at hand. Commit to not multi-tasking as you drive, especially on busy roads or through crowded intersections. Keep your cell phone turned off or get one of those new headphones that allows your hands to remain on the wheel as you talk. And don't even attempt to read a book or to glance through the newspaper as you drive to work as I see too many drivers doing. Women are often driving and applying last touches to their makeup all the time. Avoid these and other distractions as you drive. The more you are focused on driving alone, the less likely it is that you will get into a car accident.

Another obvious but important way to avoid a car accident is to obey all of the road rules and traffic signals. It is far less likely that you will wind up in a car accident if you are obeying the speed limit. Yes, the speed limit. How many of us drive under or at the speed limit in every situation? Hardly any I would say. If you can slow down a few miles per hour and avoid a car accident then I'd say it is well worth it.

The bottom line is that all driving carries a risk of a car accident. While you cannot totally prevent an accident from happening, you can take steps of caution and wisdom to lessen your chances of a car accident happening to you.

Are All Car Insurance Companies Equal? Here Is What To Look For.

Car insurance protects you against any financial loss that may happen due to an accident or theft of your car. It is a car insurance company that issues car insurance to you. A car insurance company will work up a car insurance policy for you after evaluating the various options like the make of your car, the premium that you are willing to pay, your insurance risk, etc. A yearly premium has to be paid by you to the car insurance company so that the company can pay for your loses that you may bear in the future. All the terms and conditions are mentioned in the contract and it is your duty as a car owner to look over all the points and ask the insurance agent any questions that you have in mind. It is only after all the terms and conditions are clear to you that you should sign on the dotted line and pay the premium.

Normally all car insurance companies have the same insurance policies. The premium to be paid and the percentage of losses to be covered in case of any accident may vary slightly. Since the car insurance market is very competitive, the premium rates and other terms and conditions almost remain the same.

A car insurance policy may provide property, liability and coverage depending on the type of policy. The property coverage covers losses for damage of the car or the theft of the car. Liability coverage pays for any legal liabilities to other people for bodily harm or property damage. And medical coverage covers expenses for treating injuries, medicine expenses and funeral expenses in case of a car accident. You may buy the different types of coverage depending on how much you want to spend on your policy.

A car insurance policy usually consists of 6 types of coverage. As mentioned before a customer can select from the different types of coverage. Most of the car policies last from 6 months to a year. Your car insurance company will bill you when it is time to renew your policy and be prepared for a rate hike.

The different types of coverage are :-

1) Bodily Injury Liability

This type of liability covers the expenses of injuries that you may cause to someone else while driving your car. Also the coverage includes injuries caused to a person while driving other person’s car.

2) Medical Payments and Personal Injury Protection

This type of liability covers the expenses for the treatment of injuries to drivers and other passengers. The liability also covers medical expenses and funeral expenses in the case of death.

3) Property Damage Liability

This type of liability covers for damage to the other person’s car and your car. It may also include damage to lamp posts, telephone poles, fences and other public property.

4) Collision

This type of liability covers expenses for damage to your car or the other person’s car. Even if you are at fault, then also you will be reimbursed for the expenses of repairing the car.

5) Comprehensive

This liability covers loses due to theft or damage to the car by something other than collision with another object or damage to the car due to fire, falling objects, explosion, earthquake, etc.

6) Uninsured and Underinsured Motorist Coverage

This liability covers damages to your car by another driver who is uninsured.

The coverages mentioned above are offered by all car insurance companies. In almost all states, car insurance is mandatory. Therefore, it is your responsibility as a car driver to have a policy.
